SBI pays pension to dead freedom fighters, Govt. recovers Rs. 16 cr.

The Minister said on account of these irregularities, more than Rs. 16 crore has already been recovered from SBI.

The State Bank of India continued to disburse pensions to over 3000 freedom fighters long after their death, prompting the government to recover Rs. 16 crore from it.

The government has also decided to transfer the accounts of freedom fighters receiving pension from the Centre from SBI to other banks due to irregularities in disbursement, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha.

"The irregularities, include paying pension to more than 3,000 dead pensioners for many years after their death, payment of wrong amount of pension to many pensioners, delayed payment of revised dearness relief, loss of more than 1,100 original disburser's portion of PPOs," Mr. Rijiju said in reply to a written question.

The Minister said on account of these irregularities, more than Rs. 16 crore has already been recovered from SBI.

Mr. Rijiju said in order to avoid any hardship to the pensioners, they were advised to open accounts with any other bank authorised to disburse such payment. The banks had also been asked to approach the pensioners to open their accounts by June 30, 2015.

In respect of pensioners who have failed to open new accounts by June 30, the SBI will continue to disburse their pension so they do not face any hardship, Mr. Rijiju said.
