In 1945, I use to get 1/2 a paisa - then called "dhella" - as my pocket money for going to school with which I used to have plenty of things to eat as "break fast" viz 2 Banana, handful of Ground nuts, few "amlokes", fried channa and "rewaris".During British Times and even up to 1950, a recruit soldier's monthly pay was Rs 30/- and if he was a matriculate then he used to get Rs 32/- a month.

A masala "dosa" in best of the restaurants in Secunderabad/Hyderabad and Bangalore used to cost 2 Annas (ie 8 paise) and Upmma just an anna
