Washington: Hailing India’s Aadhaar digital ID, the World Bank has said the initiative is estimated to be saving the government about $1 billion annually by curbing corruption as it underlined that digital technologies can promote inclusion, efficiency and innovation.

SC allows voluntary use of Aadhaar card for MGNREGA, 3 other schemes

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday gave huge relief to the Centre by permitting voluntary use of Aadhaar card by citizens to avail benefits under MGNREGA, pension, PF and PM Jandhan Yojna schemes.

A 5-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu said these four schemes could be implemented by use of Aadhaar card.

The SC had earlier restricted use of Aadhaar for giving subsidy on LPG and for withdrawal of ration under PDS.

However, the SC said that addition of four more welfare schemes to Aadhaar would not entitle government to insist on the unique identification number or force people to enroll under the scheme Source:Timesof india

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today took note of Centre’s plea that Aadhaar cards be allowed to be used “voluntarily” for welfare programmes other than PDS and LPG schemes and asked whether it can assure that nobody would be at a “disadvantageous” position for want of Aadhaar.

Aadhaar encryption protects privacy, will take eons to crack

 At the central data centre, the encryption processes are repeated while storing the details, making attempts to access and use the data very difficult.

NEW DELHI: The Aadhaar system's data collection and storage is strongly protected by sophisticated encryption processes to ensure biometric data does not leak either through private contractors running enrollment centres or at the central data servers that store the details.

The unique identity authority of India's processes are intended to allay fears that biometric data collected by private contractors might be vulnerable to falling in unauthorised hands as the biometric detail is encrypted using the highest available public key cryptography encryption.

CJI Dattu to head Constitution Bench on Aadhaar validity

Chief Justice HL Dattu has set up a five-member Bench headed by him to go into the constitutional validity and usage of Aadhaar. The other members of the Bench are: Justices MY Eqbal, C Nagappan, Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy.

The Constitution Bench will have its first sitting on October 14 to take up a batch of PILs by retired high court judge KS Puttaswamy and others challenging the collection of people’s biometrics such as finger prints and iris for enrolling them under the Aadhaar scheme.

The Supreme Court restrictions on Aadhaar will continue as a three-member Bench today refused to go into the pleas by the Centre and its agencies for allowing voluntary use of the identification card for implementing welfare schemes other than public distribution system (PDS) and cooking gas (LPG) subsidy.

The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that a poor starving man will have no second thoughts about shedding his privacy rights to enrol for Aadhaar, as it gets him a square meal and earnings.

With this, the government asked the Supreme Court to not stand in the way of crores of citizens willing to voluntarily enrol for Aadhaar to get social benefits and services.

Aadhaar card may remain non-compulsory, for now

Aadhaar card may continue to remain non-compulsory for quite some time for getting subsidy or official documents as the Supreme Court today said it wanted to send the PILs against the scheme to a Constitution Bench of not less than five judges.
“We are inclined to refer the case to a larger Bench,” a three-member Bench headed by Justice J Chelameswar said accepting the Centre’s plea.
