Crude Oil prices has reduced significantly from around $100/barrel to $50/barrel ,But petrol and diesel Prices in India has not been reduced in proportion to fall in international prices.This is due to higher Taxes charged by Center and State Governments .Collection of Taxes on petrol and diesel is easiest and recovery rates is also 100% ,so all govt prefer to charges this. If we calculate all the taxes in price of diesel/petrol then taxes % comes near to 50-61%. Rates varies from state to state. Highest petrol and diesel rates are in Bhopal whereas lowest petrol rates are in Panjim(Goa) and Diesel in Port Blair.
BCD - Basic Customs Duty [levied under the Customs Tariff Act]
ACD - Additional Duty of Customs [levied under section 103 of the Finance (No.2) Act, 1998(Petrol) and section 116 of the Finance Act, 1999 (Diesel)], commonly known as Road Cess.
BED – Basic Excise Duty [levied under the Central Excise Tariff Act]
SAED – Special Additional Excise Duty [levied under section 147 of the Finance Act, 2002]
AED – Additional duty of Excise [levied under section 111 of the Finance (No.2) Act, 1998(Petrol) and section 133 of the Finance Act, 1999 (Diesel)], commonly known as Road Cess.
Government has no such proposal under consideration at present to reduce the taxes on the petrol and diesel.
This was stated by Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
You will be surprise to Know that in Pakistan ,Petrol Rates is 45.26/Liter and Diesel is sold at 52.64 per liter.
