Chennai : Soon, doctors in India may be able to get foreign
postgraduate degrees such as FRCS and FRCP without travelling abroad.
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons president Dr. David J
Galloway, who signed a memorandum of understanding with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research on Monday said medical graduates will write preparatory examinations MRCP and MRCS at the Chennai based university.
By August 31, the university is hoping to register at least 100
students. The cost for taking the examinations and three-day training is 1,150 pounds ( Rs.1,02536 ). " Clearing two parts of this examination is vital. After this, students will be able to train under one of our fellows to earn the degree," he said.
" The training period is typically about six years in one of the
specialities such as orthopaedics, gynaecology and paediatrics, " he
said. Until now, students had to travel to the UK for the postgraduate training. The charity organization is likely to consider training in India.
Sri Ramachandra University vice-chancellor Dr. P V Vijayaraghavan
said MBBS students doing their residency have the option of writing MRCP, NEET and PLAB for higher education. MCI has recognised these degrees. " Now, medical graduates with foreign degrees will be inducted directly in the level of assistant professor in recognized institutions and they can work anywhere in the world," he said.
