New Delhi : If the cause is worthy enough, some judicial restraint
can be shed. In what well be a first, Supreme Court judges Kurian
Joseph and K M Joseph took the stage at a function here on Monday to showcase their singing talent for flood relief in their home state Kerala.
Shedding their traditional reserve, the judges provided a glimpse
of talents other than legal acumen at the function organized by media
persons reporting on the Supreme Court as they demonstrated their
vocal-skills to enthrall a packed audience. Justice K M Joseph was
impressive as he sang in Malayalam and Hindi. With the panache of a trained singer he was at ease with notes both high and low of the song
' Madhuban khushbu deta hai ', originally sung by legendary
singer Yasudas, and was given a standing ovation.
Speaking on the occasion, the newly appointed judge said the
Constitution talks about harmony and cohesiveness and at times like
now, citizens should come together and display solidarity.
Justice Kurian Joseph joined noted Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan for a duet and sang ' We shall overcome some day /. With an SC judge standing by his side, Chauhan asked Justice Joseph to start first saying that he will follow but Justice Joseph, perhaps willing to take a cue, said " you first ".
A large number of people, including judges from the Supreme Court and Delhi high court, attended the function to show their solidarity for the people of Kerala.
