RTI Information on number of deaths of retiree-pensioners from 1995-1996 to 2023-24

So far we have been speculating on the number of deaths of retirees and family pensioners in the absence of authentic data from LIC.I had made a RTI application for the statistics of deaths of retirees from 1995-1996 to 2023-24 to which I got a reply dated 9th January 2025 furnishing the figures for retirees only.

I attach a copy of the letter received from LIC and the tabulation and analysis made by  me based on LIC's reply.

Now we can reasonably estimate that 18000 retirees and family pensioners have died having been deprived of upgraded pension during their lifetime. This is authentically a significant number considering that there are about 79000+ live pensioners as on date.

Now we can authentically apprise the Supreme Court about the gravity of the matter necessitating removal of pension anomalies.

More importantly , these data  will also enable us to emphasize the need for providing relief by the Supreme Court with retrospective effect  as opposed to the RBI pattern of upgradation of pension with prospective effect.

So total number of deceased retirees and family pensioners 

deprived of upgradation of pension as at 1/8/2022                           17523

To this we can add 10% of deaths after 1/8/2022 of the retirees of

 pre -August 2022 period                                                                                                                    167

Estimated deaths of family pensioners after 1/8/2022 of pre-August 2022 retirees                 56

Total pensioners deprived of upgradation as at 1/8/2022                                                       17746

Thus, we can estimate that about 18000 retiree pensioners and family pensioners have died during the past 27 years deprived of upgradation

The sudden spurt in number of deaths of retiree pensioners in 2020-21 and 2021-22 is conspicuous presumably caused by Covid-19 pandemic
