Respected Members/Readers,
This month we will see a unique convergence of traditions marked by the observance of May Day alongside the spiritual celebration of Buddha Jayanti observed on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.
May Day Symbolizes the struggle against exploitation and the fight for dignity of labour. The Goal is to raise people from poverty and economic oppression, ensuring justice, equality, and empowerment for workers. The Social Dimension is collective action, solidarity, and rights-based movements are central. It’s about transforming society through fairness in material conditions. Buddha tenets symbolize liberation from suffering through wisdom, compassion, and mindfulness. The Goal is to elevate people from the agony of existence—ignorance, desire, and attachment—toward inner peace and enlightenment. The Spiritual Dimension focuses on individual transformation, ethical living, and universal compassion. It is about transcending suffering through inner awakening.
We may draw a synthesis that both observances, though seemingly different, share a common aspiration: uplifting humanity. May Day seeks to free people from external chains of poverty and exploitation. The teaching of Buddha seeks to free people from internal chains of suffering and desire. Together, they remind us that true human progress requires both material justice and spiritual awakening. One without the other leaves life incomplete.
As we celebrate the 165th birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in this month we are reminded that his literary contributions remain profoundly relevant across all eras and occasions. In the midst of today’s global turmoil affecting life of people, we find profound solace in his timeless prayer -‘বরিষ ধরা মাঝে শান্তির বারি’. Through these words Tagore implores the Almighty for showering water in the form of peace upon our troubled world, offering a vision of harmony that the universe so deeply needs today.
